The Unicode Consortium meets quarterly to review emoji proposals. The 2026 batch includes several long-requested additions.
Among the most anticipated: a proper hug emoji, a root vegetable collection, and — finally — a khinkali emoji for Georgian cuisine fans.
The Approval Process
Getting an emoji approved takes 2-3 years. Proposals must demonstrate cross-cultural relevance, technical feasibility, and avoid duplicating existing emojis.
